Stephen Shore's Modern Instances: The Craft of Photography is an experimental new memoir from one of the world's most prolific artists - an impressionistic scrapbook that documents the rich and surprising touchstones that make up over half a century of ground-breaking work. With essays, photographs, stories, and excerpts that draw on Shore's decades of teaching, this is an essential handbook for anyone interested in learning more about mastering one's craft and the distinct threads that come together to inform a creative voice. As much as offering meditation on the influences of a single artist, Modern Instances proposes a new way of thinking about the world around us, in which even the smallest moment can become a source of boundless inspiration - if only we pay attention.

"Diane Arbus is one of the twentieth century's most original and influential artists, and Diane Arbus Documents is the first definitive history of her remarkable body of work as filtered through the lens of the most important critics and art historians of her--and our--time. Best known for her penetrating images exploring what it means to be human, Arbus is a pivotal and singular figure in American postwar photography. Arbus's black-and-white photographs demolish aesthetic conventions and upend all certainties. Both lauded and criticized for her photographs of people deemed 'outsiders,' Arbus continues to be a lightning rod for a wide range of opinions surrounding her subject matter and approach. Critics and writers have described her work as 'sinister' and 'appalling' as well as 'revelatory,' 'sincere,' and 'compassionate.' Through an assemblage of articles, criticism, and essays from 1967 to the present, Diane Arbus Documents charts the reception of the groundbreaking photographer's work and offers comprehensive insight into the critical conversations, as well as misconceptions, around the artist and her work. Illuminating fifty years of evolution in the field of art criticism, Documents provides a new template for understanding the work of any formidable artist. Organized in eleven sections that focus on major exhibitions and significant events emerging from Arbus's work, as well as on her methods and intentions, the sixty-nine facsimiles of previously published articles and essays--an archive by all accounts--trace the discourse on Arbus, contextualizing her inimitable oeuvre. Supplemented by an annotated bibliography of more than six hundred entries and a comprehensive exhibition history, Documents serves as an important resource for photographers, researchers, art historians, and art critics, in addition to students of art criticism and the interested reader alike".--

"The Idea of Italy: Photography and the British Imagination, 1840-1900, examines the ways in which the new medium of photography influenced the British experience, appreciation, and perception of Italy in the mid-nineteenth century. Full-size plates-including many previously unpublished images-feature the work of both famous and little-known photographers, including Robert Macpherson, Calvert Richard Jones, George Wilson Bridges, Julia Margaret Cameron, Lady Anne Brassey, and James Craig Annan. Setting photography within a long history of image making that begins with the eighteenth-century Grand Tour, transformed by the inventions of William Henry Fox Talbot and Louis Daguerre, the sixteen essays in this volume explore photography as a vehicle for visual translation and cultural exchange. Maria Antonella Pelizzari is a professor in the Department of Art and Art History at Hunter College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York. Scott Wilcox is the former deputy director for collections of the Yale Center for British Art"--

Photographer Marcia Resnick (b. 1950) earned recognition as part of the legendary Downtown New York art scene of the 1970s and 1980s. Her portraits of the era's major cultural figures, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, John Belushi, and Susan Sontag, have contributed to the scene's mythic status. Against this backdrop, Resnick also produced a significant body of work that engaged with the history of art, took a humorous approach to conceptual art and feminism, and proposed new ideas for what photography could be. Spanning the artist's career, this richly illustrated volume explores Resnick's early influences and education at Cooper Union and CalArts; discusses her series and photobooks such as See and Re-visions; and situates the artist's work within the history of contemporary art. An afterword by Laurie Anderson speaks to the very personal vision of Resnick's photography.
